With smooth aerodynamic styling, a spacious carry-it-all cabin, and bundles of on-board technology, Volkswagen’s all-electric ID4 certainly lives up to its ‘Intelligent Design’ name. The zero emissions ID4 is a versatile and handsome crossover SUV positioned above the smaller ID.3 hatchback in VW’s EV range. The ID.5, meanwhile, is a coupe version of the ID.4. Rivals to the VW ID.4 include the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model 3, as well as the Audi Q4 e-tron and Škoda Enyaq.
ID.4 Specifications
Buyers are not short of choice when it comes to the ID.4 line-up. The top GTX models aside (see separate section below), each offering is equipped with a single electric motor driving the rear wheels via a single-speed automatic transmission, while the battery pack is positioned flat underneath the passenger compartment.
How much power and range you have in your VW ID.4 depends on the electric drivetrain you choose. ‘Pure’ spec provides 148hp and 213 miles of range (WLTP combined); ‘Pure Performance’ spec offers 170hp and 213 miles; ‘Pro’ spec gives 174hp and 318 miles; and finally ‘Pro Performance’ spec provides 204hp and 320 miles of range.
When it comes to recharging your ID.4, Volkswagen supplies its electric crossover with a Mode 3 (Type 2) cable as standard for AC and DC charging. Hooked up to a 7.2kW charger with a flat battery, you’ll regain 100% charge in 12 hours 40 minutes. An 11kW charging station cuts that time to 7 hours 30 minutes. A 100kW fast-charger, meanwhile, will recharge the battery from 5% to 80% in just 38 minutes.
ID.4 Interior
Five seats, a split-folding rear bench, and 543-litre boot – that’s the VW ID.4 interior in a nutshell. The driver is treated to not one, but two displays for the instruments and infotainment, and we love the play and pause symbols on the accelerator and brake pedal respectively.
It’s true that Volkswagen’s latest radio and navigation system isn’t the most responsive on the market, but it nonetheless has all the features EV drivers have come to expect, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink compatibility. Occupants can choose between 10 ambient lighting colours, with 30 available as an option to really bring the interior alive.
Overall, the ID.4’s cabin is practical and neatly styled if ultimately lacking the premium wow-factor of the (more expensive) Audi Q4 e-tron and Ford Mustang Mach-E. Versus the Škoda Enyaq, we reckon the VW ID.4 has more badge appeal, although we’ve a soft spot for the Škoda’s sculpted body styling and 13-inch dashboard display, which is three inches wider than the ID.4’s entry-level display.
ID.4 UK Pricing
The Volkswagen ID.4 is offered in six equipment lines. ‘Life’ starts at £36,550 OTR and comes with heated front seats, LED headlights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with touch control, and adaptive cruise control. Next up is ‘Style’ spec at £39,300 with additional 18-inch alloy wheels, three-zone climate control, Matrix LED headlights, rear tinted glass, keyless entry and starting, and a rear-view camera.
Continuing up the trim line hierarchy, an ID.4 ‘Family’ is yours for £46,185 and features 19-inch diamond-cut alloys, a panoramic glass roof, powerful LED headlights, keyless entry and starting, a rear-view camera and more. The ID.4 ‘Max’ is priced at £54,000 and is equipped with diamond-turned wheels, plusher microfleece seat upholstery, those Matrix LEDs, an augmented reality head-up display for the driver, a larger 12-inch infotainment display, and 360-degree birds eye parking aid to complement the rear-view camera.
After these trim lines comes GTX and GTX Max – read more about those below. Something to note, though: not all electric drivetrain options are available with all trim lines. For example, an ID.4 Family is not available with the 148hp/213-mile system.
And remember – the ID.4’s UK asking prices may look steep, but Mint EV leasing deals put a battery-electric car on your driveway for much, much less!
ID.4 GTX
If you’re looking for serious performance thrills, then you should consider the range-topping ID.4 GTX and GTX Max. With uniquely sporty styling including 20-inch alloy wheels and ‘GTX’ seat branding, plus stiffer suspension and optimised steering, the GTX models boast an electric motor on each axle, making them four-wheel drive.
The ID.4 GTX will accelerate from 0-62mph in just 6.2 seconds, and has a top speed of 111mph. Capable of up to 300 miles on a single charge, the ID.4 GTX’s price starts at £50,540 OTR, and the even better equipped GTX Max model is £57,270.
Conclusion
The VW ID.4 range truly has something for everyone. Crossover SUVs are more popular in the UK than ever – and it’s not hard to see why. Thanks to their lofty driving positions and stable handling, they’re as comfortable navigating motorways as they are gliding along back roads.
Throw in the ID.4’s good-sized boot, plenty of room for rear passengers, and that zero emissions battery-electric drivetrain and there is lots to love here. The exterior styling is arguably a little ‘safe’, but the futuristic beams of light accenting the nose and capacious rump leave other road users in no doubt of the ID.4’s EV status.
